Botswana battles with diarrhoea outbreak

Diarrhoea illness affecting mainly children below the age of five is currently being experienced across the country.
A Ministry of Health media release says more than 330 cases of diarrhoea with dehydration have been recorded since July 3 with Ngami, Okavango, Greater Francistown and recently Ghanzi DHMTs being the most affected.
The release confirms that all public health facilities are on high alert to detect and provide the necessary services.
It says the ministry has also strengthened surveillance, prevention and response mechanisms at all DHMTs across the country.
In addition, all the necessary resources such as equipment and medical formulas are being availed in order to alleviate the situation, says the release.
In order to ensure that the situation does not get out of control, the release says the ministry is also capacitating health care providers and engaging communities as well as other stakeholders for augmentation of efforts.
It also advises members of the public to immediately visit the nearest health facility when experiencing any unusual symptoms.
Also advised is maintenance of high standards of hygiene such as keeping the environment clean and regularly washing hands with clean water and soap. ends
