Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) members have been called upon to work hand-in-hand with party leadership in order to retain power in the next general election.

Addressing Francistown regional elective congress in Francistown on Sunday, chairperson, Mr Slumber Tsogwane said BDP’s good and sound policies were aimed at  developing the lives of Batswana.

Mr Tsogwane also stressed the need for fostering party unity and urged members to avoid character assassination, which he said had no room in the BDP, because it derailed progress and unity.

Mr Tsogwane further explained that BDP would never make unattainable promises.

Mr Tsogwane urged democrats to respect one another because it was the only strategy for unity the party needed to win back constituencies lost to the opposition; being Francistown West and South.

Mr Tsogwane also called on democrats to recruit more members for the party to win the coming general election.

“Let us work together and recruit more members and win the elections with a huge margin,” he stressed.

He said under BDP government, Batswana would continue to enjoy developmental growth as espoused in the Rural Development Policy of 2002.

He explained that the BDP government was committed to equitable distribution of national resources, especially to rural areas.

“This government wants to see those living in rural areas living  better lives,” he said, adding that such was the reason government subsidised electricity in rural areas. 

The Vice President urged members to embark on fund raising activities to help the party boost its finances.

On other issues, he thanked the general public for partaking in the fight against COVID-19 and warned that the pandemic was ‘still with us’.

He, therefore, implored Batswana to continue adhering to COVID-19 protocols.

For his part, Francistown regional chairperson, Mr Baemedi Medupi also underscored the need for party unity.

He explained that COVID-19 disrupted party activities, hence Francistown congress was a welcome progress.

Francistown region comprises Tonota, Tati East and Tati West as well as Francistown East, Francistown West and Francistown South constituencies.ENDS
