Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) will retain Bophirima Ward come April 9.
BDP chairperson, Mr Slumber Tsogwane said this Sunday as he officially launched BDP candidate, Ms Onkementse Mothei.
Mr Tsogwane, who is also Vice President, said since the first victory in 1965, the BDP had been returned to office on account of the ability to respond to the needs of the electorate, hence he was confident the party would retain the ward.
“We have always preached a basic message, easily understood by our people to the effect that as a government we stand for development and improvement of the lives of Batswana.
Since we assumed stewardship of this nation’s resources, the life of the average Motswana has undergone a tremendous positive change,” he said.
He said Batswana considered the BDP as a party of governance because it continued to be the custodian of their dreams and aspirations for a better present and better future.
Mr Tsogwane applauded the BDP-led government for its role in transforming the country, saying it had since independence, shown determination to prudently preserve and grow the interests of the country particularly in human empowerment.
He however cautioned the BDP members not to bask in the glory of previous election victories, but rather soldier on with vigorous campaigns to lure in new members to the party. He said like in the last general election, the party’s message remained the same: transforming the economy and empowering the Batswana.
“The BDP remains committed to our promises and we are in the process of delivering on our manifesto which is supported by the BDP constitution and bye elections rules and regulations all of which guide and promote inner party democracy,” he said.
Further, Mr Tsogwane said the BDP victory in Bophirima ward, relied solely on the effectiveness of all party structures in the ward in an effort to clearly disseminate the BDP massage to Batswana.
He said amidst all the COVID 19 uncertainty, Bophirima ward voters should remain resolute in their trust in the BDP-led government, and show that by voting for Ms Mothei in the coming bye election.
He described Ms Mothei as a dedicated young woman who served in the ward development committee for a long time.
For her part, Ms Mothei said her eight-year of service as Bophirima ward development committee chairperson was proof of her desire to serve the community.
She said she was better placed to be an advocate for the community ad she was born and raised in the ward. Bophirima ward council seat felt vacant following the death of the area councillor, Kagiso Mongwaketse of the BDP in December last year.BOPA
