BDP empowers women youth-VP

30 Mar 2022

Women have been encouraged to use their majority and rally behind their own Ms Onkemetse Mothei, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) council candidate for Gaborone West/Bophirima Ward bye-election.

During the party’s walk-about campaign in Gaborone on Tuesday, Vice President Mr Slumber Tsogwane said the BDP led government was committed to empowering women and youth who he urged to support each other.

“It is mostly women who take part in elections in high numbers compared to men, which means it is easy for them to elect one of their own,” he said ahead of the bye-elections scheduled for April 9.

Mr Tsogwane said Ms Mothei the best candidate to represent the needs of Bophirima Ward residents.

He said his party continued to deliver as promised in its 2019 Election Manifesto, adding it remained the only alternative.

He talked about the recently launched vaccine manufacturing plant, which he said would create employment.

This, he said, was proof of President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s resolve to drive investment. Gaborone West/ Bophirima Ward fell vacant in December last year following the death of Councillor Kagiso Mongwaketse of the BDP.

A total 1 964 people registered to vote in Bophirima during the 2019 elections.

Out of the 1 621 who cast their vote, 731 voted for the BDP; Alliance for Progressives (AP) got 333, Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) 437. The only independent candidate got 113 votes. Ends
