DIS will never seek to harm Khama
22 Mar 2022
The Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) has noted with regret the recent repetition of the alarming claims by former President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian KHAMA that there are plans to harm him and his associates.
Former President KHAMA, notwithstanding his various grievances against the Directorate, remains a person of value to Botswana who by law should be protected at all times. To this end, it would be against established democratic ethos to harm a public figure of former president KHAMA’s stature, let alone those close to him.
The DIS is required by the Intelligence and Security Service Act (2008) to provide personal security to VIPs who include former presidents Lt Gen. KHAMA, Dr Festus MOGAE and their immediate families. To this end, there can never be any merit to the claims made by former president KHAMA.
The former president like all citizens has full recourse under the law if the DIS oversteps its mandate.
His allegations should therefore always be viewed with suspicion as they have potential to sow unnecessary disharmony.
Where it concerns activities involving former president KHAMA or his associates or any other person for that matter, the public should rest assured that the DIS will conduct itself professionally and within the confines of the law. DIS
