Health ministry warns of suspect ECCO canned beef
15 Dec 2021
The Ministry of Health and Wellness has announced the recall with immediate effect of some 300g cans of ECCO beef produced by Botswana Meat Commission (BMC).
A ministry news release says the recall is due to the presence of a black-like substance found in the product.
According to the release, the affected batches bear production date of 31/08/2021, expiry date and batch NO BB 08/2026 Code D243A and production date 27/10/2021, expiry date and batch NO BB 10/2026 Code D300A.
It says the black-like substance was identified as food grade grease from the processing machinery/equipment that had filtered into the product, causing the stated batches to have a foreign body.
“Therefore, as a precautionary measure, the ministry urges consumers not to consume the affected products,” says the release.
It says BMC has notified all wholesalers, supermarkets, distributors, retailers and traders to remove and stop selling the affected products with immediate effect.
“All wholesalers, supermarkets, distributors, retailers and traders are required to recall the affected products in accordance with the Food Control (Food Safety Alerts and Recall Procedures) Regulation, SI 198 of 2018,” says the release.
Customers who bought any of the affected products are advised to return them to any grocery store or general dealer shop for a full refund.
In the event further clarification is required, affected customers are advised to contact environmental health officers in local authorities.
The ministry says it will continue collaborating with local authorities in monitoring the situation and give regular updates.Ends
