09 Aug 2021
SADC will hold its 41st ordinary summit in Malawi August 17-18.
A SADC media release states that Malawi president Dr Lazarus Chakwera will take over the bloc’s chairpersonship from President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique who assumed the position a year ago.
It says the summit will take stock of progress made in promoting and deepening regional integration in line with SADC aspirations as espoused in its Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan 2020-2030 and Vision 2050.
SADC envisages a peaceful, inclusive, competitive, middle-to high income industrialised region where all citizens enjoy sustainable economic well-being, justice and freedom, says the release.
Among key highlights of the summit are the departure of SADC executive secretary Dr Stergomena Lawrence-Tax who will be bidding farewell to the heads of state and government after eight years of service and the swearing in of her successor.
The summit will be preceded by a series of meetings from August 12 to August 16 including a public lecture, a meeting of standing committee of senior officials, council of ministers meeting and organ troika summit.
Its opening and closing ceremonies will be broadcast live by Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation and will also be accessible on DSTV channel 295. In observance of COVID-19 protocols, some delegates will attend physically and others virtually. ends
