Botswana dissociates itself from AU decision

01 Aug 2021

Botswana has noted with concern the unilateral decision by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, to receive credential from the Ambassador of the State of Israel, and grant Israel observer status at the African Union (AU).

A press release from the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation says the government is of the view that the issue is a sensitive matter that should have been brought to the attention of all AU Member States, before such a decision was reached, particularly given the long-standing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Moreover, the release says Botswana maintains that the continued occupation of Palestine by the State of Israel goes against the letter and spirit of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, as well as its obligation to respect and implement the respective Resolution of the United Nations.

“Henceforth, Botswana dissociates itself from the decision to grant AU observer status to the State of Israel,’ the release says.

In addition, the government reiterates its unwavering support and solidarity with the Palestine Authority against Israel occupation.

Further, Botswana reaffirms her commitment to support the right of Palestine people to self-determination and independence. Ends
