Turkey applauds Botswana for upholding democractic principles

15 Jul 2021

The Turkish government has applauded Botswana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy and good governance in Africa.

In a press statement released by the Turkish Embassy to mark July 15 as the fifth anniversary of Democracy and National Unity Day of Turkey, the Turkish government expressed gratitude to the Botswana government for the solid democratic background which has never allowed sinister organisations to set foothold in Botswana.

The statement also explains that on this day, Turkey commemorates the utmost sacrifice made by the Turkish people who gave their lives for the protection of democracy, freedom and constitutional order.

It further explains that since the heroic and successful resistance of the Turkish people against the coup attempt carried out by the enemies of state, July 15 is observed as Democracy and National Unity Memorial Day in Turkey.

The statement says the enormity of the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, was in stark contrast to the ideals pursued by Turkish people to cement democratic practices hence Turkey resolutely continued its efforts to fight against a terror group known as FETO and all other terrorist organisations without any discrimination.

“Fighting against a terrorist organisation requires the elimination of all its extensions, as well as its financial capabilities. To be successful in this respect, unreserved cooperation at the global level is absolutely indispensable,” states the release.

Furthermore, the press statement notes that terrorism is a global threat and should be countered globally, and that Turkey will continue to collaborate with all countries towards this end. ends
