UDC in race to keep sheriffs at bay

11 Nov 2020

The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) has raised P44 238 of the P565 000 needed to cover bills from the Court of Appeal.

The amount, which is in a UDC trust account held by Bayford and Company, represented around 7.8 per cent of the total needed for members who petitioned the 2019 general elections at the High Court.

Giving an update in Gaborone on November 10, the UDC treasurer, Mr Dennis Alexander, said there was a shortfall of P520 762 and appealed to members of the public to help.

Meanwhile, UDC spokesperson, Mr Moeti Mohwasa said resolutions of the October national executive committee meeting, made a clarion call for opposition parties to work together in terms of fundraising.

He said until October 10, the UDC had not deliberated on the liability of the petitions, but had agreed to help in paying bills for their members.

Mr Mohwasa said the UDC needed to pick up the pace in fundraising, to keep the sheriffs at bay, noting that even though the bills were not the responsibility of the UDC, they were obligated to safeguard the integrity of their members’ right to appeal.

He said petitioners had already been issued with summons to pay, which demanded swift fundraising efforts. ENDS
