Kenyatta endorses WTO candidate

23 Jul 2020

President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya has endorsed Ambassador Amina Mohamed’s candidacy for the position of the World Trade Organization (WTO) director general.

A press release from the Kenyan embassy says President Kenyatta has described Ms Mohamed as a master consensus builder, whose experience at the WTO and the multilateral trading system makes her uniquely qualified to lead the organisation.

Ambassador Mohamed has also been identified as a woman with vision, who has the capacity to unite all WTO members in pursuit of their common interests and having made exceptional contribution to international trade governance.

Among other achievements, the release says Ms Mohamed has held most senior positions at the WTO including that of the general council chairperson.

She is currently the president of the 14th session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development and former assistant secretary general and the deputy executive director of the UN Environment Programme.

If elected, Ambassador Mohamed will be poised to be the first African and the first woman director general of WTO. ends
