Letlhakeng trains beneficiaries

22 Jan 2013

Letlhakeng Sub-district has made progress in training a number of beneficiaries on small stock rearing, chicken production, backyard gardening and bee-keeping.

A total of 116 beneficiaries were trained on small stock while 19  received training on chicken production in October and November last year.  For backyard gardening, 118  beneficiaries were trained as well as 14 for beekeeping.

Letlhakeng sub-council chairperson, Councillor Tshoganetso Leuwe said this during the sub-council meeting on Monday. He said the beneficiaries were awaiting supplies from the department of agriculture.

On the alternative packages programme, Cllr Leuwe said Letlhakeng Sub-district was given P1 203137 to implement 24 projects and there had been a significant outcome since most beneficiaries had been trained in November last year.

“I am pleased that the second batch of the same was approved in November 2012 amounting to P2 702 564 to implement 87 projects namely tent hire(3), leather works (23), kiosk (38), fashion design (8),bakery and jam and vegetable pickles(6), food catering, laundry and hair and beauty salon (1). Orders for equipment and stock are in progress,” he said.

The sub-district also embarked on a programme to revive all projects in RADS settlement, adding that Kaudwane, Khekhenye, Tshwaane and Sorilatholo sewing projects beneficiaries were trained towards the end of last year.

“The main objective of the projects is for the beneficiaries to supply their local schools with uniform this year. As for bakery projects, RIIC in Kanye is yet to install kgotetso oven at Sorilatholo. Follow-ups are being made regarding this installation,” he said.

On other issues, Cllr Leuwe said the introduction of the second meal was reported to have brought positive impact in all the 20 primary schools in non-RADS settlements since the sub-district was drought stricken.

He said school heads were advised to allow hand stampers to pound four buckets per day as compared to the initial two to cater for a second meal and the food relief services department had also started distributing food items to schools.

Cllr Leuwe said all schools in Letlhakeng Sub-district were supplying pupils with bread procured locally with the exception of Thebephatshwa due to its locality. ENDS
