IEC receives 210 MP 1 547 council nominations

A total of 210 candidates vying for national assembly have been successfully nominated, of which 23 are independent candidates who will contest for the 57 constituencies in the October 23 general election.
In an interview, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) principal public relations officer, Mr Osupile Maroba said six political parties being Alliance for Progressives (AP), Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD), Real Alternative Party (RAP) and Umbrella for Democratic Party (UDC) will contest for local government positions and national assembly.
For local government, he said IEC had registered a total of 1 547 nominations, of which 199 were independent candidates, who would compete for the 490 council seats.
Meanwhile, Mr Maroba said logistics for the impending election were ongoing, which include training of poll staff and printing of ballot papers.
He said there were 925 000 plus registered voters of the 1.5 million eligible voters who would participate in the election.
Mr Maroba said external voting would be conducted on October 12 at the 36 polling stations while advance voting for poll staff would be held on October 19 which would pave way for the October 23 general elections at the 2 260 polling stations countrywide. ENDS
