Government recognises creative sector

17 Sep 2019

Young Batswana aspiring actors on September 14 thronged AFDA School for the casting call of a role in an international feature film, The Blue Mauritius.

The casting call also attracted budding Batswana actors in South Africa’s soap, Muvhango such as Sharon Seno, who plays the role of personal secretary, Marang, Maxwell Ditch, who plays the role of advocate Seretse and Gaosi Raditholo, who plays the role of Marang’s sister, Warona.

The feature film will start work in South Africa in May 2020.
Officially launching the casting call, acting deputy Permanent Secretary to Permanent Secretary to the President, Peggy Serame, said the creative sector had a huge potential to grow the economy of the country.

She said government recognised the creative industry, adding that before the end of the year, there would be a Creative Sector Strategy as part of government’s efforts to transform the economy and recognise creative as part of that growing economy.

Serame said as they roll out the strategy, they would rely on the creative sector industry to engage them and share skills.

For her part, AFDA Head of School of Live Performance, Jessica Lejowa noted that they mentored young people and helped them realise and appreciate their dreams and talents.

Lejowa said the film and theatre industry in Botswana was growing, saying there was a need to do more with regard to remunerations of the creatives.

She said artists needed to invest and participate in the economy as they were also working people. ENDS
