Shamukuni calls on voters to ensure continuity
25 Aug 2019
Several development projects have been realised in the Chobe constituency through Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) leadership.
Chobe prospective parliamentary candidate, Mr Machana Shamukuni, said this when the party launched him and prospective council candidates in Kasane on August 22.
He said by voting for him, the electorates would ensure continuity of developments in the area.
Such projects, he said, included electrification of Chituzamatako, expansion of water network in Pandamatenga, tarring of Lesoma link road, construction of water tanks in Enclave West as well as design of the Kasane new hospital.
He thanked the people of Chobe for voting for him and his team in 2014 and pleaded with them to ensure that the party retained the constituency.
When launching Mr Shamukuni and the prospective council candidates, a member of the BDP council of elders, Mr Patrick Balopi said governance of the country needed responsible and energetic representatives such as Mr Shamukuni and his team.
He said the election process was an important activity that should be taken seriously since failure to do so could lead to voting people who could place the country into an economic crisis.
Mr Balopi said the BDP had for the past 11 elections proved to Batswana that it had capable representatives who could take the country to greater heights.
He said this was the reason why Botswana continued to be the envy of other countries given the prevailing democracy, peace, tranquillity and growth in the economy.
He said there were other parties in the country that did not promise Batswana any attainable developments but only opposed BDP’s promises with the view of gaining political mileage.
Mr Balopi said given the many existing opposition parties which held nothing for Batswana, it was disappointing to see the formation of yet other new ones.
He urged the BDP’s prospective candidates to stand for the interests of their voters for the development of the country.
A member of the BDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) who is also Takatokwane-Letlhakeng MP, Mr Ngaka Ngaka said his party cared for Batswana’s welfare.
Mr Ngaka said Batswana should not be confused by parties who promised them huge amounts of the minimum wage as those amounts had potential to collapse the country’s economy.
He explained that while the BDP maintained the living wage at P1 000, it would continue to review the amount when the economy permits.
Chairperson of the Southern District Council, Mr Alec Seametso said BDP cared about Batswana hence the waiver of trading licenses for some businesses and the policy on multiple land use.
He said his party was committed to the fair distribution of resources, the reason why it was working tirelessly to root out corruption through policies such as the declaration of assets.
Mr Seametso said Batswana should be vigilant as some opposition parties were against BDP’s efforts of distributing resources fairly because their leaders wanted to be the sole beneficiaries of the resources.
A member of the Women’s wing, Ms Helen Diau urged the voters in Chobe to ensure Mr Shamukuni retained his parliamentary seat since he was able to ensure developments for his constituency. ENDS
