BDP warns voters against populist promises

11 Aug 2019

Different Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) factionaries on Saturday took turns to advise multitudes that attended the party’s launch in Tutume to keep at bay advances from the opposition, saying failure to do so could spell doom for the country and plunge it into unnecessary political turmoil.

Electorate were warned never to fall hook, line and sinker to impracticable populist promises by the opposition, which, according to speakers, only served as a bait to ‘steal’ votes from unsuspecting members of the public.

The BDP Youth Wing chairperson and parliamentary hopeful for Tati West, Mr Moabi Mavange issued a stern warning, especially to the youth not to be hoodwinked by the disingenuous lot with deep pockets.

He said as custodians of this country, young people had a colossal task of defending it by voting credible people into power.

“It is true time has come for you to use your constitutional right to entrust trustworthy individuals with the power to oversee the affairs of this country on your behalf and not to be swayed by political novices and formations that spring just about anywhere with nothing to offer,” he said, adding that BDP had a proven track record and was more than ready to steer Botswana to a high-income status if given yet another mandate to lead.

He thus called on Nkange constituents to look no further than BDP parliamentary hopeful and council candidates for the attainment of this ‘noble dream’.
Mahalapye West Women’s Wing member, Ms Mercia Sebonape said women in particular should be wary of dishonest deep-pockets who were more than ready to dole-out money in exchange for ballots.

She said BDP had a witty and true visionary driver in Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi.

Former Tati West MP and BDP veteran, Mr Charles Tibone called on Nkange constituency to see to it that they romp home the constituency, come general elections.

“You have a duty to make sure Ishmael Mokgethi makes it to Parliament and that all BDP council candidates win the 10 wards,” he said.

Like many speakers, Mr Tibone had no qualms with the leadership of President Masisi, whom he said had in unlimited measure, the inner drive to transform Botswana to greater levels of prosperity.

Mr Ishmael Mokgethi will lock horns with Alliance for Progressive hopeful, Mr Edson Woto as well as Umbrella for Democratic Change’s Dr Never Tshabang in a three-horse-race for Nkange parliamentary position.

Despite low turnout of people who registered for elections elsewhere, Nkange continues to realise a good number as a whopping 18 875 people compared to 15 196 in 2014 elections are expected to cast their vote during this year’s general elections.

With the 11th parliamentary session having closed business on Friday, it is expected that President Masisi will dissolve it as per the powers conferred on him by the Constitution and announce the polling day. ENDS
