21 Jul 2019

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has implored democrats not to be moved by empty promises which the opposition was plying.

Officiating at the launch of Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) prospective MP candidate for Shashe West constituency Mr Fidelis Molao on Saturday, Dr Masisi, who is also the party President, said for decades the

BDP has governed the country it has fulfilled its promises.

He said Botswana has become a globally recognised economy under the leadership of the BDP, adding that developments in place and more being done were a result of promises made by the BDP over the years it has ruled.

He added that going into the future, the party wanted to transform Botswana from being a mineral-based to a knowledge-based economy. He said all would be possible only if Batswana could not be moved by empty promises from the opposition.

He said the empty promises were a ploy for them to gain power at all costs agaist the BDP, warning that the opposition was incapable of leading Botswana.

He stated that many in the opposition were eyeing to exploit the economy for their own benefit, adding that many of them were against the assert declaration bill which would be tabled at the ongoing Parliament session.

He pointed out that in traversing the world he was reviving relationships with his counterparts, and was also attracting foreign investment into the country. He said his visit to China last year had benefits which Batswana, including Shashe West constituents, were about to enjoy.

He highlighted that Botswana had received a grant of over P700 million and that part of the money was going to be used to maintain the A3 road from Nata to Maun and beyond as far as Mohembo where there was also a construction of a bridge.

President Masisi said all these developments were attained by the BDP led government and a guarantee to Batswana that voting for the party once more, many new developments were still to come for the entire nation to enjoy.

BDP women’s wing chairperson, Ms Dorcas Makgatho said democrats should affirm their vote to retain the constituency. She said the results of 2014 should also be the outcome of 2019 elections, noting that the incumbent legislator had proved that he was capable, hence appointed a minister.

She said with such a position, democrats should do their part and take him to Parliament so that he continued to work for them as he had been doing for the past five years.

Mr Molao said he was confident the BDP would retain the constituency, adding that for the period he had been the MP, there had been a lot of developments. He noted that of the 13 villages in the constituency, only one was still to be electrified under the national village electrification programme.

He added that P11 million had been allocated for electrification this financial year.

He said these were major developments which the BDP had promised and fulfilled to the satisfaction of the electorates in the country. ENDS
