Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) North East region on March 23 endorsed President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi as the party’s presidential candidate .
Addressing the delegates from the four constituencies of Nata/Gweta, Nkange, Shashe West and Tati West that make up the region, President Masisi urged the party members to unite and do the right thing for the party.
He said the BDP constitution allowed that he could be challenged for the party presidency.
He, however, advised them to introspect on their nomination and not to regret its aftermath.
President Masisi said for Botswana to be known as the champion of peace and democracy, the nation had to hold in high regard consultation and respect for one another.
He added that even in situations where they differed in opinion, unity had always been on the forefront while the voice of the people was allowed to make the final say.
Furthermore, he stated that when he took over as the country’s President, he made an assessment of the party’s 46 per cent majority win during the 2014 general elections.
The assessment, he said brought the need to consult with cabinet and come up with means of addressing issues that concern Batswana, among them, the human-wildlife conflict.
In addition, President Masisi said Batswana and the Democrats should lookout for many developments which aspiring BDP candidates could make use of in order to appeal to the voters by selling the party.
He further emphasized the importance of representatives to play their role in ensuring that the manifesto of the party was well known to the people.
He highlighted that by June this year together with the First Lady Neo Masisi they will perform a groundbreaking for three high technological mines which would invest P5.6 billion from the private sector.
President Masisi also promised to address challenges of unemployment and improve the agricultural sector all with the aim of improving the economy and the lives of Batswana.
Meanwhile, the region chairperson Mr Anthony Chebane said they were preparing for the coming general elections and that they would ensure that the BDP retained the majority win.
The President also paid respect to the family of the late Mr Bingani Kesebone of Tati West. ENDS
