Masisi stresses unity for victory

10 Mar 2019

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has implored Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) members who lost primary elections to support winners for the party to excel in the general elections.

Addressing democrats in Kasane on March 7, President Masisi said unity could drive the party to victory.

He advised primary elections winners not to look down upon the losers but to work with them.

“We are at a stage where everybody should be working for the victory of the party but not to nurse egos,” he said.

Dr Masisi said democrats should prove to voters that BDP was the most stable party with a lot of vigour.

He said while he wished to maintain his position as party president, he was ready to accept results of the Kang congress even if he lost.

The President urged those who supported his vision of taking the party to a higher level to elect him in large numbers and appealed to detractors to refrain from making false allegations about him.

Dr Masisi said as President, he would ensure a good relationship between the government and workers unions as well as promote consultation.

BDP women’s wing chairperson, Ms Dorcas Makgato encouraged BDP members to support Dr Masisi in his endeavour to win the Kang elections saying women should ensure he emerged victorious since he had already demonstrated his commitment to development of the people.

Ms Makgato said it would be amiss for women democrats to vote for a woman who was only interested in their votes but never supported their activities.

She encouraged the Chobe branch to make sure they sent delegates who had a stand to the Kang congress.

For his part, MP for Chobe Mr Machana Shamukuni encouraged the democrats to arm themselves with information for the house to house campaigns and political rallies.

He assured the President of the Chobe branch’s support at the Kang congress.

Mr Shamukuni urged democrats to desist from posting divisive information on social media.

Chobe branch chairperson, Mr Itumeleng Bogopa assured President Masisi that although the branch had been in office only two weeks, it was in support of his administration. ENDS
