Masisi explains electoral changes

16 Jan 2013

Moshupa MP, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi has informed voters in Mogonye about changes in the electoral process. He said instead of using voter registration numbers, voters would in the next general elections use names as they appear in the national identity cards .

Mr Masisi, also Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, said voters would no longer spend too much time in queues.

He said numbers in the voters roll would systematically appear in alphabetical order to make it easier for the polling officers to confirm whether someone had registered to vote or not .

He stated that in the previous arrangement, voters were given voter registration numbers which slowed down the voting process as polling officers were forced to match the number in the voters roll against that of the voter registration card.

He also talked about the income tax bill, adding that stern measures would be taken against those evading tax.

Mr Masisi also complained about the collapse of Mogonye Trust, which was funded by the government to promote tourism in the area.

He placed the blame on the committee, which he said abused funds and resources . Consequently, he appealed to residents to come together in an effort to revive the trust.

For their part, Mogonye residents complained about poor internal roads in the village and delays by Water Utilities Corporation to connect water to their homes. Village Development Committee chairperson, Mrs Cecilia Baipidi said the primary school did not have electricity even though there was electricity in the village.

She said there was shortage of chairs and poor maintenance of the school.

Concerning Ipelegeng, she said they employed 34 people instead of 44, as there were not enough people to hire.

Other residents argued that people of Mogonye were selfish and would not employ those from outside.

However, Mr Masisi told them that 12 vacancies would be transferred to other places. He appealed to them to work cooperatively to develop the village. ENDS
