Correspondence between President Khama and USA President Trump

19 Mar 2017

This past week saw the publication of His Excellency the US President Mr. Donald John Trump’s response to H.E. the President Lt. Gen. Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama’s letter of congratulation to him at the time of his inauguration (20/1/17), which in keeping with protocol has also now been released for publication. Both letters appear below.

His Excellency, Mr. Donald John Trump
President of the United States of America WASHINGTON D.C.

Your Excellency,
I hope this letter finds you in good health.
As you assume office, I believe it is essential to appreciate that our two countries have over several decades and under different administrations enjoyed strong relations based on shared values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. It is my ardent hope, as I am sure it is yours, that we will closely work together to strengthen these strong bonds for the mutual benefit of our peoples.
Equally important, is the role that the United States of America has played in international affairs, particularly in conflict resolution, the fight against terrorism, maintaining and building strategic alliances, combating climate change and promoting global trade. I am confident that you will carry on this mantle of responsibility that has been the cornerstone of American foreign policy. I would like to quote the words that were delivered in a prayer at your inauguration, “Let this United States of America be that beacon of hope to all people and nations...”
Let me take this opportunity to wish you and your administration success as you seek to build upon the development and prosperity of the American people and the global community at large.
Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration and esteem.

Lieutenant General Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA

President Trump’s response
Dear Mr. President Seretse Khama Ian Khama
I warmly welcome your message of congratulations on my swearing-in as President of the United States and greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness, support, and encouragement.
We have challenges ahead that, in partnership and on common ground, I believe we can overcome. We also have tremendous opportunities to advance shared goals, promote global stability, and achieve peace and prosperity.
