Tswapong villages need storm water drainage

12 Jun 2013

Palapye Sub-district councillors have adopted a motion requesting the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to fund the construction of storm water drainage in all villages near Tswapong hills.

Debating the motion on June 11, Councillor Kabo Ketshogile of Lerala ward said Tswapong villages were highly affected by floods because they were located near the hills, hence the need for a storm water drainage system to lessen the impact of floods.

Cllr Ketshogile said since the ministry had embarked on a similar project in Tswapong South, it should consider funding the construction of storm water drainages in all villages in Tswapong North to assist in channeling heavy flow of surface water.

Councillor Samuel Morebudi of Maunatlala ward said Maunatlala was mostly affected and had recorded some casualties as a result of floods. He said the floods had destroyed people’s houses and roads, adding that there was no proper route to Maunatlala Sub-land board due to soil erosion caused by heavy down pours.

He said the construction of storm water drainage would lessen the impact of floods in his ward. Councillor for Mogapi, Mr Joseph Dintwa said Mogapi also needed a storm water drainage saying that houses were submerged in water during floods which occurred at the beginning of the year. He said some people were still living in tents.

He said if this situation was not addressed it would result in poverty as floods destroy people’s crops, livestock and small businesses. Ends
