DIS worried
22 Jun 2016
The Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) notes with concern yet another publication of false and misleading allegations about our organisation in the 19/6/16 edition of the Sunday Standard newspaper.
The story headlined Fresh evidence suggests Choppies bought off DISS carries no fresh evidence but stale allegations that had been published by the newspaper in the past. We are thus compelled to dismiss this story which is grossly malicious and clearly intended to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.
It would appear that having realised that they could not come up with news stories, the editors of the newspaper embarked on a desperate attempt to fill up its pages by recycling false allegations to impute corruption and abuse of office at the Directorate of Intelligence and Security.
The DIS is manned by professional staff who discharge their duties professionally and impartially within the provisions of the Intelligence and Security Service Act 2007.
The DIS is further guided in carrying out its duties by institutions responsible for providing oversight, which include, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Parliamentary Committee on Intelligence and Security, the Central Intelligence Committee, the Accountant General’s Office, the Auditor General’s Office, the Intelligence Tribunal and the Intelligence and Security Council. We expect them to highlight any wrongdoing by the DIS which would not be based on unsubstantiated reports.
The DIS has unearthed and continue to track and apprehend organised criminal syndicates involved in, motor vehicle theft, poaching, illegal diamond dealing, human trafficking and smuggling, money laundering, fraud, drug trafficking, corruption, terrorism, to mention but a few.
The DIS welcomes the overwhelming public support it continues to receive and assures Batswana that no amount of misinformation circulated by the Sunday Standard newspaper will derail the DIS from performing its duty to protect public safety and national security. ENDS
