Response to Botswana Gazette article Nasha calls govt out for silence on Panama Leaks
21 Apr 2016
The Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security has taken note of an article in the Botswana Gazette edition of 20th April 2016, along with a number of previous articles, which feature what in our view are sensational and misleading headlines targeting the reputation and integrity of the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ian Kirby in the context of the so-called Panama Papers.
We further note that these headlines have given rise to calls by politicians and others for Justice Kirby to step down from his office.
The Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security wishes to confirm that Justice Kirby has already disclosed all information relating to him in the saga and the government is satisfied with his explanation.
Justice Kirby has also explained his side of the story to the media and in a radio interview. Justice Kirby has been open about his investments, which are not unlawful, and do not present any possible conflict of interest in his work.
The government’s view is that, on the basis of the available information, there is no reason whatsoever for the President of the Court of Appeal to step down.
The Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security calls for the respect of judicial officers and indeed all people who are going about national duty diligently to desist from character assassination based on unpatriotic agendas. ENDS
