Opposition leaders root for Nyeku

Opposition party leaders have implored residents of Phillip Matante East ward to vote for Mr Uyapo Nyeku in the bye-election scheduled for the coming weekend.

Speaking at the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) rally held at Block 5 on Saturday, UDC vice president Mr Ndaba Gaolathe described Mr Nyeku as energetic, intelligent and with leadership skills.Mr Gaolathe urged the electorates to “ embrace change” and vote for the UDC candidate.

He said Mr Nyeku had passion, team work spirit and leadership skills, and therefore urged Phillip Matante East residents to elect him to teh city council chambers to speak on their behalf. Mr Motlatsi Molapisi advised the opposition parties to come together and be focused on delivering victory for UDC.

Ms Same Bathobakae of the Botswana National Front and MP for Tlokweng also pleaded with the voters to elect Mr Nyeku, adding that the bye-election provided the oppostion parties with an opportunity to work together.

 Botswana Congress Party (BCP) representative, Mr Vain Mamela noted that the day is very special as they were campaigning for Mr Nyeku and also celebrating the 50th of anniversary of the Botswana National Front's (BNF) existence.He said their party believed in social democracy adding that it was their philosophy because they preached social justice.

Mr Mamela said they were fighting for economic empowerment, gender equality because they as opposition party leaders, their aim was to create sustainable jobs for young people.He said as opposition parties they were advocating for creation of permanent jobs, especially for young people whom he said were roaming the streets in numbers.

For his part UDC secretary general Mr Wynter Mmolotsi said their aim was to encourage young people to embrace change so that their challenges would be addressed.

He said they had encountered problems of backlog on plots allocation in Francistown and Mr Nyeku would take the matter up with the relavant authorities once elected to council. END
