Botswana's position on UN Sanctions on North Korea
03 Mar 2016
The Government of the Republic of Botswana welcomes and supports the unanimous decision by the United Nations Security Council for adopting additional tougher sanctions against the rogue regime of North Korea.
Botswana condemns in the strongest terms possible, the act of defiance as demonstrated by North Korea’s firing of short range missiles immediately following the adoption of the resolution. The recent hostile and destabilizing acts by North Korea would in this regard require the international community, more than ever, to impose punitive measures that will isolate this despotic regime.
For these sanctions to be effective, concerted efforts and cooperation by all the members of the international community will be an absolute imperative. Botswana therefore calls upon all the members of the international community to vigorously implement this latest set of sanctions.
Botswana wishes to commend the members of the United Nations Security Council for living up to their responsibility for unanimously taking decisive and prompt action against North Korea’s subversive behaviour. It is our expectation that the UN Security Council will continue to lead by example on matters which threaten international peace and security. Ends
