The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) led-government is keen on ensuring that every aspect of the local economy has a fair representation of Batswana youth, says President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama on Friday in Mosu.
Officiating at the BDP youth wing council, President Khama stated that the future of any organisation lies in the ability to invest in its young people.
He noted that the ability to strengthen the party especially in the era of advanced technology, to stay relevant in the present and future, is through ensuring that they play a critical role of continuous and consistent engagement of the youth in a significant and meaningful way.
Government, he said remains committed to addressing issues pertaining to the youth in Botswana, with a view to make them part and parcel of the country’s economic progression, as strategic players. Employment creation is therefore at the top of the list in their priority areas.
The President said government has over the years put in place various mechanisms aimed at supporting the youth so as to enable them to play a crucial role.
He therefore urged BDP youth to take advantage of government programmes and sell them to the rest of Batswana.
All the resolutions adopted, he said should be a product of collective discussions and transferred in to tangible deliverables for the advancement of both the party and the nation.
BDP he said was making progressive strides in the area of youth representation within the leadership pipeline.
President Khama said he was pleased to recognise that the efforts at recruiting talented and active young people led by the party chairperson have borne fruit.
He noted that in excess 400 new members were recruited in Gaborone South alone, and more than 50 of the core activists of the opposition have been recruited in Gaborone North.
“The ripple effect of the said recruitments have been felt and are taking effect nationally,” he said.
President Khama noted that an elected councillor was recruited in Mogoditshane constituency, and also paralysed BMD youth wing adding that the BDP continue to harvest at BCP as those who have joined their party are well known with many coming.
The gratifying aspect he said was that more than 90 per cent of those recently recruited are young people.
The President said his party has lost one or two members recently and explained that some of whom were disgruntled for not getting positions in the party or at national level. Ends
