Former Francistown mayor, Mr Shadreck Nyeku, was laid to rest in Maitengwe on Sunday.
Speakers at the funeral described the councilor for Phillip Matante East ward in Francistown South constituency as a people’s person.
They said, in his leadership position, he never placed his interest ahead of those who sent him.
The leader of Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD), Mr Ndaba Gaolathe said Mr Nyeku led by example and was a visionary leader who would want to satisfy the interest of his electorates.
He said it was such reasons that even after crossing the floor from Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) to BMD, his electorates went on to vote for him in the 2014 general elections.
Mr Gaolathe said this was an indication that they trusted and believed that he would represent them well at any given platform.
Because of his character and discipline, Mr Gaolathe said at their party, they made Mr Nyeku the Disciplinary Committee chairperson because they trusted that he would not be biased.
For her part, Francistown mayor, Ms Sylvia Muzila, praised Mr Nyeku for having represented the city well at various platforms.
At his death, she said he was the chairperson for audit committee, a committee, which introspected on the finances of the civic authority.
Ms Muzila further highlighted that prior to his passing, the council was preparing for him and other colleagues to go on a benchmarking mission to Tshwane City in South Africa in search of ideas of how the city was running its central business district.
She said several development projects were taking place in Francistown and leaders such as Mr Nyeku were among many other people involved in the process of giving their city a new phase.
Speaking on behalf of the constituency, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkange and also the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Mr Edwin Batshu, urged Mr Nyeku’s friends, family, party colleagues and fellow councillors to rather not mourn him but to celebrate him.
He implored the hundreds that came to his funeral to work tirelessly to surpass what he could have done himself as an honour for the work he did for the country and those he represented.
Mr Nyeku is survived by his wife, four children, a girl and three boys as well as two sisters. Ends
