UDC roots for opposition unity
12 Oct 2015
Several speakers at the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) victory celebration held in Mulambakwena recently have called for cooperation among opposition parties.
Parliamentary contestant for the Tonota constituency in the 2014 general elections, Mr Pono Moatlhodi said time was now ripe for opposition parties to set their differences aside and work together.
He said with only a few years left before the 2019 general elections, efforts should be intensified to bring together all opposition parties.
Turning the focus onto the Mosojane ward, whose councillor, Mr Mbaakanyi Smart is the sole UDC representative in the Tati West constituency, Mr Moatlhodi, who is a former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, decried the unavailability of a good road network connecting the four villages of Mulambakwena, Mosojane, Pole and Masukwane which make up the ward.
Francistown South MP, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi concurred on the need for all opposition parties to work together. He said their wish was for the UDC to contest the next general elections with four parties under its auspices.
Another speaker, Mr Bigani Shongwe, who contested for the Nkange constituency in the previous general elections thanked the Mosojane ward residents for having chosen Mr Smart.
He said Mr Smart’s track record as a leader was impeccable, saying his achievements as a trade unionist spoke volumes of his capability as a leader. UDC’s 2014 elections parliamentary hopeful for Tati West, Mr Richard Gudu implored opposition parties not to rest on their laurels, but rather that they should begin to intensify their preparations for the next general elections.
The celebration, which was attended by several UDC leaders among them Bonnington South MP, Mr Ndaba Gaolathe and UDC chairperson, Mr Motlatsi Molapise also saw new members being welcomed into the UDC . Ends
