Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) councillor in Lobatse constituency, Mr Kabelo Sebako has resigned from active politics for personal reasons.

Lobatse Town Council public relations officer, Mr Ofentse Thwabi said Mr Sebako handed his resignation letter on Monday July 27.

He also confirmed that the outgoing councillor has gone through all the necessary steps in relinquishing his post, adding that the Lobatse Town Council (LTC) has forwarded the resignation letter to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD).

Mr Thwabi said the town council still awaits a response from the ministry for the confirmation of the councillors’ resignation.

For his part, Mr Sebako, who is a member of the Botswana Movement for Democratic (BMD, also confirmed that he was quitting active politics for personal reasons. “I am quitting active politics to pursue my personal interests,” he said.

Mr Sebako had emerged victorious in the Boswelatlou ward during last year’s general elections under the UDC ticket.

He said he had informed all the relevant authorities in the constituency about his resignation.

During his tenure as a councillor, he served as a finance committee member.

In the meantime, Lobatse principal election’s officer, Mr Leshe Toteng said they have not received any official correspondence notifying them about Mr Sebako’s resignation.

He said only after the ministry has confirmed the resignation and declared a vacant post that an election instrument would be issued. He said thereafter, the Independent Electoral Commission would take the necessary steps to conduct elections. ENDS
