Botswana Congress Party (BCP) delegates will descend on Kanye at Seepapitso Senior Secondary School for an elective congress over the President’s Day holidays where Dumelang Saleshando will slug it out to retain the presidency against Mr Tebogo Duna. 

BCP Secretary General Mr Akanyang Magama relayed to BOPA that delegates from regions across the country will arrive on July 18th, and that Saleshando will officially open the congress on Sunday, July 19.

Mr Magama said other key positions to be contested for include the vice presidency which will pit Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang against Mr Taolo Lucas.

Ms Motsei Rapelana will defend her chairmanship position against Mr Phillip Bulawa while Mr Kentse Rammidi will lock horns with Mr Phillip Monowe for the coveted position of secretary general.

Selebi-Phikwe West legislator Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse will go up against Mr Ditiro Majadibodu for the position of publicity secretary. Mr Dennis Alexander is unopposed for the position of treasurer.

Presidents of the party’s youth and women leagues, as well as regional chairpersons will make up the new central committee.

According to Mr Magama, reports of both the secretary general and treasurer will also be discussed in a closed session.

Evaluation of last year’s general elections will also be among the key discussion issues for the new central committee. 

According to the new BCP constitution adopted in 2014, the committee will take the party to the 2019 general elections.

Mr Magama said delegates will be given an opportunity to further debate opposition unity, adding that resultant resolutions will be binding. ENDS
