Masisi wins chairmanship race

The Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi, is the new Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) chairman.
Mr Masisi, also Moshupa/Manyana MP, won the chairmanship race during the party’s central committee elections at the national congress in Mmadinare on Saturday (July 4).
He garnered 582 votes against former ambassador to the United States, Ms Tebelelo Seretse's 219.
The third spot went to Mr Moemedi Dijeng with 69 votes while former minister of defence, justice and security, Mr Dikgakgamatso Seretse, came fourth by obtaining 57 votes and Mr Biggie Butale, who is also MP for Tati West, came fifth with 23 votes.
Mr Botsalo Ntuane, who was up against Mr Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri, became the new secretary general. Mr Ntuane received 724 votes while Mr Matlhabaphiri obtained 180.
The deputy secretary general position went to Mr Shaw Kgathi, who is MP for Bobonong and also Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, after scooping 296 votes.
Mr Metlha Mokwena came in second with 248 votes followed by Ms Tebatso Lekalake- Moshabela who obtained 184 while Mr Anderson Mbaha came in fourth with 128 votes.
Mr Satar Dada retained his position as the party’s national treasurer unopposed. The deputy treasurer’s seat was won by Mr Jagdish Shah who obtained 653 votes against Mr Paul Paledi’s 127 votes and Lesedi Dintwe received 19 votes.
The five additional members positions in the central committee went to Mr Nonofho Molefhi (460), Ms Botlogile Tshireletso (355), Dr Unity Dow (323), Mr Fidelis Molao (250) and Mr Daniel Kwelagobe (232).
President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama is expected to elect five more members to the central committee. ENDS
