Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) deputy secretary, Ms Keireng Zuze says they have proposed some reforms.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on June 5, Ms Zuze said a number of recommendations had been suggested with regards to the legislation during a stakeholders workshop. The proposals included issuance of writ and election day.

She said IEC should work on such matters together with other key stakeholders and submit them to legislators for decision making.

Also, she indicated that they had done some benchmarking on voter card because it had been realised that many people who had registered were denied to vote when they could not produce voter cards.

She added that permanent registration was also discussed at length and they had recommended that if linked with the Land Administration Processes Capacity and Systems (LAPCAS) programme, it would minimise vote trafficking.

On electronic voting machines, Ms Zuze they had once interacted with Indians who initiated the system in Namibia, but a decision was never taken.

She however noted that IEC was considering the use of IT solutions within the electoral process.

“We wish to invite some companies to come and showcase various options of electronic voting so that we could show this to Members of Parliament,” she said. ENDS
