The former vice president, Lt Gen. Mompati Merafhe has been commended for supporting Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) women’s wing.
Speaking during a memorial service organised by Serowe North constituency in honour of the late VP in Serowe on January 15, the MP for Mahalapye East, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso said Gen. Merafhe was actively involved in their funding raising activities so much that he even donated cattle at some point.
Ms Tshireletso, also the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, said Lt Gen. Merafhe was an assertive and straight forward man.
Another speaker, Mr Thomas Moseki who belonged to the same cell with the late former VP, told the crowd that General Merafhe exhibited his brilliance during his primary school days. He was a man of many talents and he wrote creative and good essays, said Mr Moseki who also went to school with General Merafhe.
He recalled a time when they were asked to write essays about their experiences. While most of them wrote common essays like “my first experience at school” the witty General Merafhe penned about a safety pin (button). “This was an indication that he was an ingenious, intelligent and meticulous colossus of a man,” added Mr Moseki.
He said Lt Gen. Merafhe toiled conscientiously for this country, from being a police constable to finally ascending to the second highest office in this land. He thus encouraged his children to follow their father’s footsteps.
For his part, Mahalapye West youth branch member, Mr Merapelo Barobi described the late former Vice President as someone who had young people’s interests at heart. BDP deputy secretary general, Ms Malebogo Kruger commended General Merafhe for his dedication to the development of the country.
“He was leader who was not afraid to be hated for the truth,” she said adding that his truthfulness, hard work and discipline saw the country rise from being poor to middle income. ends
