08 Dec 2014
Councillor for Village ward in Gaborone Central Constituency, Mr Kagiso Thutlwe, was on December 5 elected Gaborone City Council (GCC) mayor, a position he stood for unopposed.
The election of the city mayor, an exercise which has been on going in various administrative towns and district headquarters, came a month following the country’s general elections on October 24.
Mr Thutlwe is deputised by Councillor Kagiso Tshekega of Mosekangwetsi ward in Gaborone West South Constituency who beat Mr McDonald Peloetletse of Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) with 24 votes to 11 while one vote was declared spoilt.
Both the mayor and his deputy are from Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) which has a total of 22 councillors followed by BDP with nine and Botswana Congress Party (BCP) with five councillors.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Thutlwe said there was need to invigorate the face and the outlook of Gaborone, which he said was not attractive to visitors. Mr Thutlwe however said he was optimistic that he would not fail on his challenging assignment.
Mayor Thutlwe said the council would work hard with the government to make sure that youth unemployment was addressed.
For his part, Mr Tshekega said he was also happy for having been chosen to lead the council; a position which he said attracted responsibility and therefore said they should all unite for a common cause of assisting people. ENDS
