Kgatleng District Council (KDC) has elected Councillor Mpho Morolong its chairperson.

The Boseja central ward councillor who entered KDC with the Umbrella for Democratic Change ticket was unopposed for the council chairmanship. He will be assisted by former council chairperson and Botswana Congress Party councillor, Mr Stephen Makhura who was also unopposed.

In his maiden speech, Councillor Morolong encouraged unity among the councillors, its staff and other stakeholders. He said it was only through unity that the council could better the lives of its people and create a lasting legacy.

“We can only manage to deliver to our level best if we stay united,” councillor Morolong said. Councillor Morolong said their principal mandate was to bring services and development to the residents of Kgatleng District.

For his part, Councillor Makhura said Kgatleng was a unique district in the sense that no political party had ever attained absolute majority at council level in a long time. Hence, he said as council authorities they had to learn to respect the wishes of the people and embrace their unique choices.

“This is the will of the people and we have to respect it and practice it, what we need is to push for the development of Kgatleng district, “councillor Makhura said. The special full council session also had the opportunity to vote for members of various council committees.

Such committees included that of Finance, education and social services, audit, sanitation and health, physical planning, trade and licensing. ENDS
