Lobatse councillors have elected Ms Malebogo Kruger of Botswana Democratic Party as the new mayor.
Her deputy would be the BDP councillor for Peleng East, Mr Francis Mokwena.
Councillor Kruger of Thema ward garnered six votes defeating the Umbrella for Democratic Change Councillor for Tsopeng North, Gofaone Kedise who got five votes during a special full council session on November 27.
Councillor Mokwena received seven votes against four of Boswelatlou ward councillor Kabelo Sebako of UDC. In her acceptance speech, Ms Kruger thanked all the councillors for showing confidence in her by electing her to lead the council.
She called for team work for the betterment of service delivery in the constituency and urged councillors to forget their party differences and work together to improve the lives and serve the interests of the locals.
“It is our duty as the ruling and opposition councillors to sail the ship to one direction,” she said. She further urged councillors to strive for prompt service delivery to enhance continuity of services in their area.
Projects such as leather hub and Milk Afric companies would increase business investments in Lobatse, she added. For his part, the deputy mayor, lauded councillors for upholding democrat spirit in the house and urged them to act as intermediaries for the sake of the voters pleas.
“We are leaders as well as servants therefore we should execute our duties diligently to meet the communities’ needs,” he said.
The deputy mayor also called on councillors to show some form of decency throughout their serving terms so as to keep their house in order and to remain exemplary to others. ENDS
