Long time Kweneng District Council chairperson, Mr Motlhophi Leo has lost his position to Mr Jeffery Sibisibi, councillor for Ntloedibe ward.

This was Mr Leo’s second loss in a space of a month as he recently lost Loologa ward to Umbrella for Democratic Change's (UDC) Mr Mookami Mantimane.

The new chairperson,Mr Sibisibi will be deputised by Ms Tshepo Warreus who together with Mr Leo are nominated councillors. Mr Sibisibi was elected by 53 councillors against Mr Tona Selala of UDC’s 27 while Ms Wareus got 56 votes against Mr Mantimane’s 25.

The council has 22 opposition members, of which two are  for Botswana Congress Party with the rest belonging to the UDC . The three Kweneng Sub-district councils also had opportunities to elect leadership for their respective sub districts, where new council chairpersons were elected.

Cllrs Botokanyane Motoroko and Ontlametse Mokgosi are the new faces of Molepolole/Lentsweletau Administrative Authority, Duncan Ramasiagopana  has taken over the Mogoditshane /Thamaga  leadership assisted by Moemedi Mokgachane while Thomas Batlhophi is the new Letlhakeng Sub-district council chairperson with cllr Lefoko Kegopotswe as his vice chairperson.

Meanwhile, Mmankgodi West councillor Dux Mafhoko’s effort to have Kweneng District council reverse its initial decision of using administrative boundaries to ease the delivery of services failed to succeed as most councillors felt the arrangement was convenient and appropriate.

Kweneng District Council secretary, Mr Wazha Tema , advised that proper consultations were made with concerned areas and consensus was reached based on convenience and efficiency in the delivery of services to communities. Mr Tema told the council that the arrangement was merely administrative and would not anyway affect political boundaries as it was meant to ease the delivery of services. ENDS
