Boko appeals to Gaborone Central voters

20 Oct 2014

The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) leader, Mr Duma Boko, has urged Gaborone Central constituents to vote for the party on October 24.

Addressing the UDC rally on October 19, Mr Boko said Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) had been in power for a long time, but had failed to create enough sustainable jobs for Batswana as well as to uphold true democracy and prosperity in the country.

If elected, UDC would bring a swift change in the lives of Batswana. He said Botswana Congress Party (BCP) did not deserve the vote of Batswana, as its leader, Mr Dumelang Saleshando betrayed the umbrella movement.

Another speaker, UDC’s Gaborone South prospective parliamentary candidate, Mr Murry Dipate urged Gaborone Central constituents to send Mr Phenyo Butale to parliament to complete the raise that was began by the late BMD leader, who was also UDC secretary general, Mr Gomolemo Motswaledi.

He said Gaborone Central constituents had suffered and therefore needed to vote for UDC, as Mr Butale and his six councilors were capable leaders who would not put their interests before those of their voters.

He also described Mr Butale as a down to earth person who deserved to represent Gaborone Central constituents in Parliament, as he quit his well-paying jobs to come and serve them.

For his part, Mr Butale said he was prepared to represent the interests of the Gaborone Central constituents in parliament. Mr Butale also pleaded with the constituents to give him a chance as Gaborone Central MP for five years, together with his six councilors.

Even after the many years that BDP had been in power, Mr Butale said Batswana were still experiencing so many challenges, amongst them being of high rates of unemployment amongst the youth.

These challenges, he said needed a leader of his caliber to resolve them in order to promote the lives of Batswana. This, he said if elected he would achieve by working hand in hand with his constituency members.

Meanwhile, the father to the late Mr Motswaledi, Mr Thatayaone Motswaledi also attended the rally as an invited guest. Mr Motswaledi was invited to issue awards to the four football teams that participated in the UDC’s Gaborone Central constituency football tournament held in honour of the late Mr Motswaledi.

Positions one, two, three and four were scooped by Maruapula council ward football team called Boko Haram, Notwane council ward football team called Segoditshane Football Club, Tsholofelo South council ward football team called Jiga Bonito Football Club and Boikhutso council ward football club called Dikgaka Football Club, respectively.

The teams were awarded as follows; Boko Haram FC walked away with P2 000, a trophy and gold medals, Segoditshane FC got P1 500, a trophy and silver medals, Bonto FC got P1000, a trophy and bronze medals, whilst Dikgaka FC was given a prize money of P750.ENDS
