Some of the Selebi-Phikwe Town Council’s (SPTC) major achievements are the upgrading of recreational facility funded by the Ministry of Youth Sport and Culture to the tune of P1.2 million and the primary school facilities backlog eradication project which comprised of 24 teachers quarters.
SPTC mayor, Mr Tebogo Matlhogonolo said this during a dinner on Friday night ( October 17) to bid farewell to the outgoing Selebi Phikwe councillors. Mr Matlhogonolo said the SPTC delivered five destitute houses funded under the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 financial years.
The council also installed tower lights in Botshabelo and rehabilitated 200 street lights, he added. He said the council had requested about P400 000 to setup a drainage system in phase I to address the problem of flooding of homesteads during heavy rainy seasons.
The mayor noted that through the Poverty Eradication Programme, 312 projects worth P3 million had been undertaken to economically empower the less privileged members of society.
Other projects earmarked to bring developments and diversify the economy of the mining town and the region are still in the pipeline, he added. Mayor Matlhogonolo noted that the SPTC was in the process of drafting the Urban Development Plan four and the anticipated conclusion date for consultation is December this year.
He said few weeks ago the council launched revised standing orders for SPTC which will be the guiding document in future. Mr Matlhogonolo commended both councillors and the staff for the good working relationship.
He said the 15 councillors who made the SPTC council were a marvelous team to work with. “You gave me the extraordinary privilege of leading you for almost three years. You reflected this through your outstanding spirit of teamwork,” he said.
He said the efforts of the SPTC, government and parastatal also did not go unnoticed, adding that the SPTC partnership with other stake holders was of the highest order.
Companies such as BCL Mine contributed immensely towards the development of the mining town as it funded the construction of special education facility at Anderson
Primary School as well as providing a school bus, he said.Ends
