BDP still relevant - Khama

19 Oct 2014

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) president, Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama says his party remains relevant to the needs of Batswana and there is no other party that can beat it.

Speaking during a BDP rally in Gaboroneon October 18 to sell parliamentary and council candidates of the five Gaborone constituencies to the voters, he said Batswana should give him and his party a chance to finish the roadmap he laid for the country for another five-year term.

He said as October 24 nears, Batswana should introspect and remember where they were coming from and be determined to vote for BDP  “in order to secure your future.”

‘’I urge you to go through the BDP manifesto and look at what we achieved in the past and ensure that you entrust your vote with the BDP in order to move Botswana forward,’’ he said.

President Khama said his party intended to work tirelessly to overcome unemployment by developing more sectors to facilitate industrial employment and instill the culture of entrepreneurship among young people as they cannot all be absorbed by government and parastatals.

He said if BDP retained power, his priorities would be to continue to eradicate abject poverty among Batswana, improve housing provision through greater funding of low-income groups, self-sufficiency in power generation and provision of water especially to the southern part of the country.

President Khama said BDP would introduce more programmes that would better the lives of Batswana and eradicate abject poverty by the year 2016. He said BDP had done well for the past years in every sector of the economy, and continued to be a beacon for democracy, good leadership and governance.

President Khama further condemned opposition parties for criticising the BDP programmes without offering better alternatives, apart from benchmarking on what was already availed by BDP.

BDP national campaign manager, Mr Alec Seametso said President Khama traversed the entire country to get grievances of Batswana on first-hand information basis in order to improve their welfare.

‘’Khama is the only President who interacts with ordinary people on the street and that should tell you that he is the people’s president,’’ he said. He said Batswana should be happy for the peace and tranquillity prevailing in Botswana, hence the need to continue voting for BDP.

Prior to the rally, President Khama took to the wards of Gaborone North and Gaborone Bonnington South to meet and greet democrats. ENDS
