Khama roots for Dow

05 Oct 2014

Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama has urged voters in the Mochudi West constituency to give their votes to Dr Unity Dow, a Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) candidate for this month’s elections.

When addressing a BDP star rally in Moshawaneng ward in Mochudi recently, President Khama said in 2009, the BDP won the constituency, but the incumbent MP, Mr Gilbert Mangole left with the seat to the newly formed Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) .

Lt Gen. Khama said people who caused divisions in the BDP had long left the party and the party was now stable. He stated that there was a lot of confusion in the opposition parties especially after the formation of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) as some members believed they belonged to their former parties.

He cited some BNF members who did not want to join UDC . He told BDP members that opposition parties were not ready to lead the country because they were still unable to lead themselves and thus they would remain opposition in parliament.

President Khama said despite the BDP government being ridiculed, they would continue to serve Batswana and their democratic standing in Africa and the world proved the opposition parties wrong. President Khama said Dr Dow could not be compared to anyone in the opposition ranks adding that they needed more women in parliament.

Another speaker, Assistant Minister of Health, Dr Gloria Somolekae appealed to the members to vote during the election day because that is what would give them victory. She described Dr Dow as a principled woman who believed in what she did adding that she was a hard worker.

Former Member of Parliament, Mr Rakwadi Modipane said nothing stopped BDP from being voted again into power come October 24. He said their seat was stolen after 2009 and they would make sure that that did not happen again as they were hurt by such developments.

For her part, Dr Dow  described BDP as a party that served the interests of Batswana.

She said discipline and dignity set BDP apart from other parties who find joy in “insulting and demeaning others.”

Dr Dow said she was certain of victory in the coming elections. Ends
