AU Commission visits Botswana

08 Sep 2014

The African Union Commission will visit Botswana on September 9, on a sensitisation and motivation campaign.

The campaign aimed to encourage the civil society in Botswana to be part of the election process for the second General Assembly of Economic Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC).

A statement from the commission stated that ECOSOCC, as an organ of the AU, distinctively provided an opportunity for African Civil society to play an active role in charting the future for the continent.

It further explained that it was an organ of the African Union composed of different social and professional groups of member states of the African Union.

The visit to Botswana would part of the continent’s wide activity undertaken by the AU Commission following a decision adopted by the 23rd ordinary Session of the AU Assembly held in Equatorial Guinea in June this year that called on the AU to conduct a campaign to encourage greater participation and gathering sufficient candidatures from the African Civil Society.

The mission, stated the release, aimed to strengthen efforts geared at promoting greater collaboration of the AU and the civil society organisations and other non-state actors.  ENDS
