Boko calls for positive laws
08 Sep 2014
Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) leader, Mr Duma Boko has called for enactment of laws that can impact positively on people’s lives.
Mr Boko was speaking at a rally to launch prospective UDC parliamentary candidate for Kanye North, Mr Kwenantle Gaseitsiwe and council hopefuls on September 6.
He said his wish was to make an impact in changing people’s lives through making laws that would be aligned to people’s needs. He said minerals that were mined in Botswana should be processed locally to create jobs; hence there was need to change the mines and minerals act for the said purpose.
He said jobs were exported to other countries because diamonds and other minerals were processed outside the country yet such a move was detrimental to Batswana.
UDC leader said if there was a law that prevented the external processing of minerals millions of Batswana could be benefiting from such, and more jobs could be created ensuring food on the table for citizens.
Laws should liberalise people from the bondage they were encountering, he said, adding that when UDC assumed the power to lead the country people would be served without fear or favour because of the quality of the party’s leadership.
He said UDC had quality leaders that could stand for the challenges of its people and were well versed with problem solving skills. He said his parliamentary hopefuls were well versed with developmental issues and therefore they need to be in parliament to drive issues of national interest that may benefit Batswana.
For his part, parliamentary aspirant for Molepolole North, Mr Mohammed Khan urged voters to vote for UDC because under the current leadership, Batswana were burdened with debts. He said UDC would ease the burden on employees as it would advocate for quality standards of living.
Mr Khan said he belonged to the school of thought that postulated that ‘give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime,’ arguing that UDC would stand on the precept when voted into power and thus would teach Batswana to fish rather than give them fish.
