MP wants direct election of President
28 Jul 2014
Tati East Member of Parliament, Mr Samson Guma has promised to table a motion in Parliament calling for the direct election of state president.
When launching Serowe North parliamentary candidate, Mr Guma solicited support from Mr Kgotla Autlwetse upon his election to Parliament to back his motion calling for the direct election of the president failing which ‘you will be on your own there.’
Mr Guma said time was ripe for Batswana to start voting directly for their president. “I am very well aware that when tabling such a motion I will be accused of being a bootlicker who is hell-bent towards pleasing President Khama,” Mr Guma said.
Amongst other motions in the pipeline, Mr Guma informed democrats, was that he intended tabling a motion calling on the president to select professionals and non-members of parliament to serve as cabinet ministers.
Mr Guma argued that the practice was bearing fruit in other countries and added that the move would allow elected members to serve their constituents effectively and efficiently. He added that if implemented the move will help curb a situation where constituency matters suffer at the expense of ministerial duties.
He warned Mr Autlwetse that could he be fortunate enough to be selected a cabinet minister then he will experience his claims and he may receive constant complaints from the constituency. ENDS
